<p class="Help-Text">If you are configured to collect sales tax, the tax is automatically calculated and applied to each sale:</p>
<ul>
<li class="p-Help-Bulleted">
<p class="Help-Bulleted">The sales tax <a href="../qbpos_basic_procedures/sales_tax/basic_tax_locations.htm">locations</a> and sales tax <a href="../qbpos_basic_procedures/sales_tax/basic_tax_codes.htm">codes</a> you have set up in company preferences</p>

<li class="p-Help-Bulleted">
<p class="Help-Bulleted">How your tax codes are <a href="../qbpos_inventory/inven_tax_codes.htm">assigned to inventory items</a></p>
</li>
<li class="p-Help-Bulleted">
<p class="Help-Bulleted">(Basic) Whether or not the <a href="../qbpos_customers/customers_tax.htm">customer</a> has been assigned to a sales tax location or flagged as tax-exempt, in which case you are prompted to collect (or not collect) tax appropriately</p>
</li>
<li class="p-Help-Bulleted">
<p class="Help-Bulleted">(Pro) If you have multiple stores, the default tax location selected at each store</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p class="Help-Text">If necessary, the tax code assigned to an item or the tax location applied to the entire sale can be manually changed on a sales receipt before saving.</p>
<p class="Help-Info-Line">To change the tax code of an item being sold:</p>
<ol>

<p class="Help-Steps"><a href="../qbpos_basic_procedures/basic303.htm">List</a> the item on the document.</p>

<p class="Help-Steps">Highlight the item and then click <span class="hcp2">E</span><font class="hcp3">dit</font><font><span style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal;">.</span></font></p>

<li class="p-Help-Steps">
<p class="Help-Steps">On the Item Properties dialog, select a new tax code from the drop-down list in the <font class="hcp3">Tax Code</font> field.</p>
</li>
<li class="p-Help-Steps">
<p class="Help-Steps">Click <font class="hcp3">OK</font>.</p>
</li>
</ol>
<p class="Help-Indent">The item tax amount and the receipt total are recalculated.</p>
<p class="Help-Info-Line">To change the tax location for the entire sale:</p>

<p class="Help-Text" style="margin-left: 0px;">With the &#160;receipt displayed, select <span class="hcp2">Change</span> <font class="hcp3">Tax Location</font> from the I Want To menu.</p>

<p class="Help-Indent">The Change Tax Location window is displayed.</p>

<p class="Help-Text" style="margin-left: 0px;">Select a new tax location.</p>
</li>
<li class="p-Help-Text">
<p class="Help-Text" style="margin-left: 0px;">Choose <span class="hcp2">S</span><font class="hcp3">elect</font> to close the window.</p>

<p class="Help-Text">This change can be made before or after items are added to the receipt. &#160;If items were previously added, the sales tax will be recomputed to reflect the new tax location.</p>

<p class="Help-Note" style="font-style: normal;"><span class="hcp2">Pro Note</span>: The same procedures apply to customer orders. You can also change the tax code directly in the item list on Customer Orders, if the <span class="hcp2">Tax Code</span> column <a href="../qbpos_basic_procedures/basic_customizelistcolumns.htm" style="font-style: normal;">is displayed</a>.</p>
