<p class="Help-Text">When a customer returns an item to exchange for another, you are doing two transactions on one receipt: a return of one item and a sale of another. Point of Sale will automatically calculate any difference in item prices and sales tax.</p>
<p class="Help-Info-Line">To handle a merchandise exchange:</p>

<p class="Help-Steps">Follow the basic sale procedure, listing both items directly on the receipt and selecting <span class="hcp2">Make this item a return</span> for the returned item. For more information on this procedure, see <a href="receipt1005.htm">Making a Sales Receipt</a>.</p>

<p class="Help-Indent">With the original sales receipt selected in sales history or the customer's history, select <span class="hcp2">Exchange Items</span> from the I Want To menu. This method allows you to verify the item prices and quantities from the original receipt.</p>

<p class="Help-Indent">Select the items being exchanged in the upper list using the checkboxes. Change the quantity if necessary.</p>
<p class="Help-Indent">Then enter the new exchange item in the bottom list using standard item listing procedures. Select <span class="hcp2">Accept Exchange</span> when done. The return and new sale item quantities and prices are transferred to the sales receipt and the amount due from or to the customer is calculated for you.</p>

<p class="Help-Steps"><a href="receipt1014.htm">Take payment or give change</a>, as applicable, for any difference and then save and print the receipt.</p>

<p class="Help-Nested-List">If money is due the customer, enter the amount in the <span class="hcp2">Change</span> column on the payment widow.</p>

<p class="Help-Nested-List">To refund a charge account customer, enter the amount in the <span class="hcp2">Account Payment</span> field.</p>

<p class="Help-Nested-List">If refunding to a credit or gift card using the QuickBooks POS Merchant or Gift Service, enter the amount in the <span class="hcp2">Credit Card Refund</span> or <span class="hcp2">Gift Card Sell</span> field and authorize using the same card as was used on the original sale. A credit will be made to the cardholder's credit card account or the gift card.</p>

<p class="Help-Nested-List">Refunds cannot be made to a debit/ATM card. Refund the amount as cash, gift card/certificate, or another method per your store policy.</p>

<p class="Help-Bulleted">If integrated with QuickBooks financial software and the exchange is for a charge account customer, be aware that putting both return and sales items on a single receipt will create only one document in your financial software, based on the net amount of the receipt. If negative, a customer payment or credit memo is created. If positive, a customer invoice is created. If you always want customer payments/credit created for returns and invoices for sales, record returns and sales on separate receipts.</p>

<p class="Help-Bulleted">The item(s) returned by the customer are added back to inventory. If the merchandise is unsalable, you should create a quantity <a href="../qbpos_adjustments/memosoverview.htm">adjustment memo</a> to remove it from inventory or a <a href="../qbpos_receiving/voucher_returns.htm">return voucher</a> if the merchandise is being returned to your vendor for credit.</p>
